People who are devotees of Mahadeva may not know there is a wonderful temple situated in Kolkata, Madhyamgram. It is in the form of Mahakal Lord Shiva, the primordial force of the universe. This Mahakaal temple is situated in Madhyamgram, Kolkata, just within walking distance of Madhyamgram Chowrasta (four-point crossing road) towards Badu. It takes not more than 2 minutes to walk to the mesmerizing Mahakal temple. I, personally a seeker of old Shiva and Shakti temples, started to explore as many great temples nearby Kolkata and its suburbs, and it is one of them.
A group of folk, some young and some old, told me the history behind the temple. It was made by a great devotee of Lord Shiva, almost 50 years ago. He once dreamt the presence of Mahakaal, but didn’t understand and recognize the force. The same dream happened to come and he understood it was his Lord who wanted him to build a temple (Mahakaal) in that place. Later, he got a picture that was found near his house that came with the floating of water, a bit abstract, but he found it to be Mahakaal in the form of Shiva. Finally, he decided to build a small temple there, and now it has become a big one.
The temple is built with bricks and wood, a concrete building beautifully crafted by a great artisan. You will be amazed to see the structure of Mahakaal. Yes, it is! When I first saw the structure, I became dumbfounded. For a moment, I stopped, motionless, speechless. What do we generally see when we see Maa Kali and Lord Shiva? Maa is standing on the chest of Lord Shiva. Shiva looks calm, but Maa looks fierce. Isn’t it? But here the picture is different. Here, in this Mahakal temple Kolkata Madhyamgram, we see Lord Shiva in the form of Mahakal who is standing on the chest of Maa Kali. But here, Shiva looks calm, not fierce. This is the exact picture that the devotee dreamt of Mahadeva and decided to build it.
Puja is conducted by a Brahmin Purohit on a regular basis. Sometimes যজ্ঞ (Yagna) or offering is conducted on special occasions, particularly on Amavasya (known as the new moon). You can also arrange a personal puja, if you like. For that matter, you need to talk to the temple authority.
In the ambit of this Mahakal temple Kolkata Madhyamgram, you will see other temples, like Hanuman JI and Manasa Devi. The temple is very clean and surrounded with a garden.
Animal lovers like me will be happy to see dogs are cordially permitted to enter, take rest, sleep, and roam around in the temple. Oh yes, it is Lord Shiva who is the Rudra, the Mahakaal who loves dogs. He is the personification of all living beings on earth.
If you are a devotee of Lord Shiva and Goddess Kali, and want to see the Mahakaal form of Shiva, it is a must-visit place for you, at least once in your lifetime. Not very far from your place if you are a Kolkatan.
I, personally, explore various temples in West Bengal, which I blog here for your reference. I hope you will like it. Next, I will explore a 150 years old Shiva temple near Gustia, Badu, which is approximately 7 km from Madhyamgram Kolkata.
